Free Guide to Resetting Your iPhone 13

Understanding iPhone 13 Reset Options

Your iPhone 13 can be reset in different ways, depending on what you want to accomplish. Apple offers several reset methods that remove different amounts of data and settings. Understanding which reset option you need is the first step in the process.

A soft reset, also called a force restart, stops all running apps and refreshes your phone's memory without erasing any data. This works when your phone is frozen, apps keep crashing, or your screen isn't responding to touches. A soft reset takes about one minute and your phone will restart just like turning it off and back on.

A factory reset erases everything on your iPhone 13, including apps, photos, messages, contacts, and all personal settings. You would use this option if you're selling or giving away your phone, experiencing serious software problems that won't go away, or starting completely fresh. A factory reset returns your phone to how it looked when it first came out of the box.

Between these two extremes, you can also reset individual settings. For example, you can reset your network settings if you're having Wi-Fi problems, reset your keyboard dictionary if autocorrect is behaving strangely, or reset your home screen layout if you've disorganized your apps. These targeted resets fix specific issues without touching your photos or messages.

The type of reset you choose depends on your situation. If your phone is just sluggish or one app is misbehaving, a soft reset usually works. If you have persistent problems across multiple apps or you're preparing to sell your phone, a factory reset is the right choice.

Practical Takeaway: Before you reset anything, identify what problem you're trying to solve. Write down which reset option matches your situation so you pick the right one.

How to Perform a Soft Reset on Your iPhone 13

A soft reset is the gentlest way to refresh your iPhone 13. This method is safe to try first because it doesn't erase any of your data—it just turns your phone off and back on in a special way that clears temporary problems. Most freezing issues, app crashes, and performance hiccups get fixed by a soft reset.

To perform a soft reset on iPhone 13, you'll use the volume buttons and the side power button. First, quickly press and release the volume up button. Then quickly press and release the volume down button. Next, press and hold the side button (the power button on the right side of your phone) until you see the "slide to power off" screen appear. Don't release the button when you see this screen.

Keep holding the side button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple logo appear. This usually takes about 10 to 15 seconds of holding. Once you see the Apple logo, you can let go of the button. Your phone will restart, and within about one minute, you'll see your lock screen again.

During the restart, your phone may show the Apple logo for 30 seconds or longer. This is normal. Don't try to use your phone while it's restarting. If you're in the middle of using an app when you start the soft reset, that app will close without saving your work in it, but your saved files and photos won't be affected.

After your phone restarts, test it out. Try opening the app that was crashing, check if Wi-Fi is connecting properly, or see if your screen is responding to touches the way it should. Most people find that a soft reset solves their immediate problem and lets them keep using their phone normally.

If your phone was running hot before the reset, you may notice it feels cooler now. If you were having battery drain problems, your phone may hold a charge better. These improvements often happen because the soft reset stops background processes that were running incorrectly.

Practical Takeaway: Do a soft reset whenever your iPhone 13 is acting sluggish, apps are crashing, or your screen isn't responding. It's safe and takes less than two minutes from start to finish.

Backing Up Your Data Before a Factory Reset

If you've decided to do a factory reset, the most important step is backing up your data first. A factory reset erases everything, so without a backup, you'll lose your photos, messages, contacts, app data, and all your personal information permanently. Apple gives you two main ways to back up your iPhone 13: iCloud and a computer.

iCloud backup stores your data on Apple's servers, which means you can restore it to any iPhone as long as you know your Apple ID password. To set up iCloud backup, go to Settings, tap your name at the top, select iCloud, then tap iCloud Backup. Turn on the iCloud Backup toggle. Your phone will start backing up automatically when it's charging and connected to Wi-Fi. The first backup may take several hours, depending on how much data you have. Apple gives you 5 gigabytes of iCloud storage for free, which is enough for most people's data but may not cover large photo libraries.

A computer backup using a Mac or Windows PC gives you more control and stores everything locally. Connect your iPhone 13 to your computer using a USB cable, open Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows, select your phone, and click "Back Up Now." This method doesn't have storage limits and completes faster than iCloud for most people. Many people do both types of backup for extra protection.

Before you start your backup, check how much data you have. Go to Settings, tap General, then select iPhone Storage to see your total. If you have lots of photos and videos, your backup may take considerable time. Make sure your phone has at least 50% battery before starting, and leave it plugged in during the backup process.

Your backup includes your contacts, calendar events, app data, messages, notes, reminders, and settings. However, it doesn't include apps themselves—those download fresh from the App Store when you restore. After your factory reset, you'll restore from your backup by selecting "Restore from iCloud Backup" or "Restore from Computer Backup" during the iPhone setup process.

Verify your backup completed by checking iCloud settings. Go to Settings, tap your name, select iCloud, then tap "Manage Storage" to see when your backup was created. The most recent date tells you when your last successful backup occurred.

Practical Takeaway: Before doing any factory reset, create at least one backup using either iCloud or your computer. Check the backup completion date to confirm it worked.

Performing a Factory Reset Through Settings

A factory reset through your iPhone 13's settings is the method most people use because it doesn't require a computer. This option erases all your data and returns your phone to its original condition. You can only do this if your phone is turning on and you can access the settings menu. If your phone won't turn on, you'll need to use the recovery mode method instead.

To start, open Settings and tap your name at the very top of the screen. This shows your Apple ID information. Select "iCloud" from the menu and scroll down to find "Sign Out." When you tap this, you'll be asked to enter your Apple ID password. This step disconnects your iPhone from iCloud, which is required before erasing.

Go back to Settings and look for "General" near the top of the menu. Open General and scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll see "Transfer or Reset" or similar text depending on your iOS version. Tap on this option. Next, select "Erase All Content and Settings." Your phone will warn you that this erases everything—read this warning carefully to make sure you're ready to proceed.

Enter your Apple ID password when prompted. This password protects your phone from being erased by someone else. After you enter it correctly, the process begins. Your screen will go black, and you may see the Apple logo. The entire factory reset takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on how much data your phone contains.

During the reset, don't turn off your phone or unplug it if it's charging. Don't try to use it for any other purpose. When the process finishes, your phone will restart and show the "Hello" setup screen, just like a brand new iPhone. From here, you can set it up as a new phone or restore from your backup by selecting "Restore from iCloud Backup" and entering your Apple ID information.
