Learn How to Connect Devices to Sonos Speakers

Understanding Sonos Speaker Basics and Compatibility

Sonos makes wireless speakers and sound systems that connect to your home network and play music from various sources. Before connecting devices to your Sonos speakers, it's important to understand what types of devices work with the system and what requirements you'll need to meet.

Sonos speakers use Wi-Fi to connect to your home network, which means they need a functioning wireless router. The speakers themselves come in different models, including the Sonos One, Sonos Five, Sonos Beam (a soundbar), Sonos Arc, and the portable Sonos Move. Each model has slightly different features, but they all share the same basic connection principles. Your home Wi-Fi network should support devices on the 2.4 GHz frequency band, which most modern routers provide. Some Sonos speakers also support 5 GHz connections, but the 2.4 GHz band is more widely compatible and often more reliable for these devices.

The devices you can connect to Sonos speakers include smartphones (both iPhone and Android), tablets, computers (Mac and Windows), and smart home devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. You can also stream music directly from services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and many others without needing a separate device to control playback. Some Sonos speakers have built-in voice assistants, meaning you can speak commands directly to the speaker rather than using your phone.

Sonos speakers require the Sonos app to set up and manage your system initially. This app is where you'll handle most of the connection and configuration tasks. The app communicates with your router and the speakers to establish connections and manage your audio setup.

Practical takeaway: Check that you have a Wi-Fi router with a 2.4 GHz band available, and identify what devices you plan to use for controlling your Sonos speakers. Write down your Wi-Fi network name and password before you begin the setup process.

Setting Up Your Sonos Speaker for the First Time

The initial setup process for a Sonos speaker is the first step in being able to connect other devices to it. This process involves unboxing the speaker, powering it on, and creating or accessing a Sonos account.

Start by unpacking your Sonos speaker and locating the power cable. Plug the speaker into a power outlet in the room where you want to place it. The speaker will power on, and you should see a light indicator. Most Sonos speakers have a light on the top or front that will glow when the device is powered and ready. Leave the speaker plugged in and powered on throughout the setup process.

Next, take a smartphone or tablet and open the Sonos app. If you don't already have the Sonos app, you'll need to obtain it from your device's app store. Once you open the app, you'll see an option to set up a new speaker. The app will scan for nearby Sonos devices on your network. When it finds your speaker, it will display the model name and serial number to confirm you're setting up the correct device.

During setup, you'll need to provide information about your home Wi-Fi network. The app will show available networks in your area. Select your home network from the list and enter your Wi-Fi password. Make sure you enter the password correctly, as incorrect passwords are the most common reason people have trouble connecting Sonos speakers to their networks. After you enter the password, the speaker will connect to your Wi-Fi.

You'll also need to either create a Sonos account or sign into an existing one. A Sonos account allows you to manage your speakers, access music services, and control settings across multiple devices. During account creation, you'll provide an email address and create a password. You may also be asked to set a room name for the speaker (for example, "Living Room" or "Kitchen") and to indicate your country and time zone.

Once setup is complete, your speaker will show as connected in the app, and you can begin adding music services and connecting other devices. The setup process typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Practical takeaway: Have your Wi-Fi password written down or easily accessible before you begin setup. Create a Sonos account before starting, as this will make the process faster. Use descriptive room names when naming your speakers so you can easily identify them later.

Connecting Smartphones and Tablets to Sonos Speakers

Once your Sonos speaker is set up and connected to your Wi-Fi network, you can use a smartphone or tablet to control it and play music. Both iPhone and Android devices can control Sonos speakers through the Sonos app.

To connect your smartphone or tablet, first make sure your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Sonos speaker. This is important because the app communicates with the speaker through your home Wi-Fi. If your phone is on a different network or using cellular data, it won't be able to control the speaker (though some advanced Sonos features do allow control over the internet from outside your home network).

Open the Sonos app on your phone or tablet. The app should automatically detect your Sonos speaker since it's on the same network. You'll see your speaker listed with its room name. Tap on the speaker to select it. Once selected, the app displays playback controls, volume adjusters, and options to choose music sources.

From the main playback screen, you can browse music services to which you've added credentials. Sonos supports many music streaming services. If you want to use Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, or another service, you'll need to add that service to your Sonos system through the app first. To do this, look for a settings or services section in the app and search for the music service you want. You'll be asked to log in with your account credentials for that service. Once you've added a service, you can browse its library and queue songs from your phone.

Multiple phones and tablets can connect to the same Sonos speaker, but only one device can control playback at a time. However, you can switch control between devices easily—just open the app on a different phone and select the speaker. You can also use Sonos speakers as part of a multi-room system, where music plays throughout your home on multiple speakers in different rooms, with one device controlling playback across all of them.

If you're away from home, you can still control your Sonos speakers if you've enabled remote access through the Sonos app settings. This requires that your speaker stays connected to your home network and that you're logged into your Sonos account on the phone you're using to control it.

Practical takeaway: Keep your phone on the same Wi-Fi network as your Sonos speaker for reliable control. Add your favorite music services to the app first—you'll only need to log in once, and then you can browse and play music from any device that controls the speaker. Test basic playback with a song or podcast to confirm everything is working before trying more advanced features.

Connecting Computers and Music Services to Sonos

You can also control your Sonos speakers from a computer and play music from your computer's stored library or from music streaming services accessible through web browsers.

For Windows computers, you can obtain the Sonos app directly from the Sonos website or from the Microsoft Store. For Mac computers, the Sonos app is available through the Mac App Store or the Sonos website. Once installed, the application works similarly to the mobile app. Launch the program on your computer, and it will search for Sonos speakers on your network. Select your speaker and you can begin playing music.

If you have an older computer or prefer not to install software, you can use a web-based player. Some music services like Spotify Web Player and Apple Music have web versions that work in your browser. You can play music from these services and then send the audio to your Sonos speaker in some cases, though this depends on the specific service and your setup.

Sonos also allows you to play music stored locally on your computer. To do this, you'll need to tell the Sonos app where your music files are located on your computer. In the app settings, look for a library or music library section. Add the folder where your music is stored (for example, your Music folder). The Sonos app will scan this folder and create a searchable library. You can then browse and play these stored songs through
