Five Trends for Jobs in 2023

From lifestyle changes to workplace changes, trends are everywhere. It may entail a change in the way your workplace runs or an increased reliance on new skills.

If you are looking to break into an industry, knowing these trends and tailoring your resume toward them gives you a competitive edge. Research the trends in skills, knowledge and training and if you lack those make a plan to obtain some of them while searching for a job.

If you are not in the job market but want to know what the year is going to bring to your workplace, look for numerous trends to impact your workspace. Everything from the way breaks are viewed to how workdays are structured is changing. Additionally, the job market is considered an employee’s market, meaning that there are currently more jobs than workers to fill them. This makes it easier to shift positions, but it can also mean if you lack sufficient skills and remain relevant, you could lose your job.

Job Market Changes in 2024

The job market is in constant fluctuation and 2024 will be no different. Breaking out into your first real job or looking to switch from your current one, certain trends are on the rise for recruiters and hiring departments. Look for companies aggressively pursuing and wooing highly qualified candidates.

One: The move toward enticing high quality workers with additional value-added offers is an increasing trend in companies actively appealing to job seekers. The job market is more competitive for companies and it’s in their best interest to continue hiring and retaining qualified personnel to keep a competitive edge. This means that while the company may be interviewing you, they are aware you are evaluating them as well.

In 2024 look for companies to offer benefits and hiring packages laden with extras. When you are interviewing, do not be afraid to ask about the culture of the company. Companies producing attractive job descriptions can be deceptive.

By inquiring about day-to-day requirements of the job as well as any future growth opportunities, you may find the job falls short. The current trends favor the job seeker or workers desiring upward or lateral movement within their own companies.

Two: Transparency within interviews is another trend hitting the job market in 2024. There is an increased demand for complete disclosure on offered positions and the accompanying benefits. If you are highly qualified and experienced, your leverage is going to be greater than in the past. In order to create the most efficient job seeking experience, pressure to provide a complete, transparent description of a job position is being placed on employers.

Three: However, because of this new tendency to court highly skilled workers, or entice them away from other companies, workers who refuse to keep their skills relevant could face extinction.  Upskilling refers to a worker who continues to learn additional skills for a job. As automation continues to rise, the skill gaps continue to increase, leaving complacent workers without a job as low-level positions become fully automated. Interviews reveal incoming workers place higher importance on the availability of professional training offered by potential employers because the savvy job seeker knows staying ahead of the technology is important. Now more than ever being able to continually develop and cultivate new skills is crucial for a continued career in any industry.

Developing new skills has always been a trend, but this year look to see the emphasis become imperative.  If you do not possess many of the skills employers are placing an increased importance on it becomes increasingly difficult to secure, or keep, a job. In 2024 there are 10 skills that employers believe to be most beneficial in the workplace in the growing age of technology:

  1. Oral communication
  2. Social Media
  3. Graphic design
  4. Web development
  5. Data science
  6. Interpersonal management
  7. Development tools
  8. Business management
  9. Leadership
  10. Time management

Four: So-called “soft skills” like communication, time management, and leadership may be a surprising trend to you. However, in an age where nearly everyone can work with hard skills, communicating effectively with co-workers to produce a cohesive project is vitally important. Oral communication is crucial for anyone in the workplace. You must be able to work with others and communicate your ideas clearly. Communication includes interpersonal management and leadership. Being able to work alongside and manage a team is always desirable, especially as increased communication technologies allow you to work with a broader range of professionals around the world.

Trends for new skills in the workplace are situated around internet and technology. As technology becomes integrated more fully into the workplace employers will expect you to understand how to use it. Social media has become a driving force in multiple companies, and workers who have not familiarized themselves with it, or the etiquette involved, may see themselves passed over for promotions. Social media allows companies to reach a broader demographic across the world. Skills in this area include digital and social media measurement as well.

Development tools referred to as basic coding are also trending upward. Programs housed under this category include Java, Linux, and C++. Understanding and applying coding will be crucial for all businesses as they strive to provide the most secure and efficient connections. While not every worker needs to be a programmer, understanding the basics makes you highly employable and successful. This is because 2024 is going to see a tremendous explosion of companies expanding into online platforms, chatbots, AI interfaces and virtual technology.

Five: Many companies are predicted to switch to a hybrid work structure, allowing certain employees and positions to work from a home office. Look, too, for the open office concept to take a lot of hard knocks this year as recent studies report its negative impact on productivity. While companies enjoy savings from the open office concept, in regard to overhead, look for many companies that are able, to switch over to individual, or smaller group structures.
