Learn What AARP Membership Actually Includes Today

What AARP Membership Covers: An Overview

AARP membership is a subscription-based program designed primarily for people age 50 and older. As of 2024, AARP has more than 37 million members, making it one of the largest membership organizations in the United States. Understanding what your membership actually includes can help you determine whether the benefits align with your needs and financial situation.

The core AARP membership package includes several categories of offerings: publications, discounts on products and services, travel deals, health insurance information resources, and access to member-only programs. However, many people join AARP with assumptions about what the membership covers, only to discover later that certain benefits require additional steps, enrollment in separate programs, or may not be available in their specific state or situation.

AARP membership costs $16 annually for the first year and $24 per year after that, though promotional rates are frequently offered. The organization generates revenue not just from membership dues but also from insurance products, partnerships with retailers and service providers, and advertising. This business model is important to understand because it means some "benefits" listed under your membership are actually partnerships where AARP receives commissions.

AARP offers different membership tiers. The standard membership provides access to most discounts and publications. AARP Premium membership, which costs more per year, adds features like roadside assistance and additional discounts. Some people also maintain AARP membership specifically to access certain insurance products, even if they use few other benefits.

A practical takeaway: Before committing to AARP membership, review your state's specific offerings on AARP's website and compare the actual discounts you would use against the annual cost. Many people find value in just one or two specific benefits, while others use the membership broadly.

Publications and Information Resources Included

One of the most visible aspects of AARP membership is access to AARP Magazine, which is mailed to members' homes 10 times per year. The magazine covers health, wellness, financial planning, travel, technology, and lifestyle topics. Many members appreciate receiving this publication, though it's worth noting that similar information is also available free on AARP's website and through their newsletter options.

Members also receive access to AARP's Bulletin, a smaller publication that arrives separately and covers news and policy issues affecting older adults. Additionally, members can access numerous online guides and resources on AARP.org covering topics like Medicare, Social Security, caregiving, health conditions, technology, and financial planning. These resources are technically available to the public, but membership includes physical versions of some materials and email updates.

AARP's website hosts an extensive library of information about healthcare topics, retirement planning, and legal matters. While not a substitute for professional medical, legal, or financial advice, these resources provide general educational information. For example, AARP offers detailed articles about different types of Medicare plans, how they work, and their costs, though the actual enrollment in Medicare happens through Medicare.gov, not through AARP.

The organization also provides information about Social Security benefits, including how benefits are calculated, how timing affects the amount you receive, and how to understand your Social Security statement. Again, this is educational information, not a service that handles your actual benefits.

Members gain access to AARP's technology guides and tutorials covering topics like smartphone use, online safety, video calling, and social media. Many local AARP chapters also offer in-person technology classes and workshops on these topics.

A practical takeaway: Much of AARP's published information is available free online without membership. If receiving physical magazines and publications is important to you, that's a real membership benefit. If you primarily want information resources, you can often access the same content free by signing up for AARP's newsletter without becoming a member.

Discount Programs and Retailer Partnerships

AARP membership includes access to negotiated discounts at numerous retailers, restaurants, and service providers. However, the scope and value of these discounts vary significantly, and many people overestimate their worth. Common discount categories include: restaurants and food delivery, travel and hotels, car rentals, cell phone plans, prescription medications, eyeglasses and hearing aids, and home improvement products.

For example, AARP has negotiated discounts at major hotel chains that typically range from 5% to 10% off standard rates, though these discounts may not be lower than rates you could obtain through other methods like loyalty programs or online comparison shopping. Some restaurant chains offer 10% to 15% discounts to AARP members, but this is contingent on presenting your membership card at the time of purchase.

Cell phone plan discounts through AARP partnerships have become increasingly popular. Members can receive discounts on major carriers' plans, typically ranging from $5 to $25 per month depending on the carrier and plan selected. These discounts are permanent as long as you maintain the membership and the partnership remains active.

Prescription medication discounts through AARP's partnership with pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS can sometimes reduce costs, particularly for medications not covered by insurance or for people without prescription insurance. The actual savings depend on the specific medication and which pharmacy participates in the program.

Hearing aids and eyeglasses represent another discount category, with AARP members receiving negotiated rates through partner providers. However, it's important to note that these are still expensive items, and the discounts may be comparable to what you'd find through other membership programs or by shopping independently.

Travel discounts are heavily promoted in AARP marketing, but their real value depends on your travel habits. AARP offers discounts on cruises, guided tours, car rentals, and hotels, but these must be booked through AARP's travel partners, which may carry higher base prices than booking independently elsewhere.

A practical takeaway: Before joining for discounts, identify which specific discounts you would actually use regularly, calculate the potential savings, and compare that against the $16-24 annual membership cost. If you would save more than the membership fee using just one or two discounts annually, membership may make financial sense for you.

Health Insurance Information and Resources

A significant portion of AARP membership value relates to health insurance education and information. AARP provides detailed information about Medicare coverage options, Medicare supplement insurance (Medigap), and Medicare Advantage plans. The organization also offers information about dental, vision, and hearing insurance products available to older adults.

It's crucial to understand what AARP does and doesn't do regarding health insurance. AARP does not provide health insurance directly through its membership. Rather, AARP has partnered with insurance companies that sell insurance products to AARP members. When you enroll in one of these insurance products, you have a relationship with the actual insurance company, not with AARP, though AARP facilitates the partnership.

The Medicare information resources are substantial. AARP's Medicare guide covers how Medicare is structured, what Part A covers (hospital insurance), what Part B covers (medical insurance), what Part D covers (prescription drugs), and how Medigap supplemental plans work. This information helps people understand their options before making enrollment decisions.

AARP also provides information about when you can change Medicare plans, including the annual enrollment period that runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. This educational information about timing and rules is genuinely helpful for people navigating Medicare decisions.

Members can also access information about long-term care insurance, life insurance, and other insurance products. AARP's role is primarily educational and introductory, connecting members with insurance carriers that offer products through the partnership.

Additionally, AARP provides health articles and wellness information covering common health conditions, medications, preventative care, and lifestyle factors affecting health. These are written in plain language and cite medical research, though they're not a substitute for advice from your personal healthcare provider.

A practical takeaway: Use AARP's health insurance information resources to understand your options, then compare rates and coverage directly with insurance companies and through Medicare.gov. Don't assume that purchasing an insurance product through AARP means getting special rates unavailable elsewhere—compare the actual policy and price with the same product purchased directly from the insurance company.

Travel Benefits and Vacation Packages

AARP heavily promotes travel discounts and vacation packages as core membership benefits. These benefits include discounted rates on hotels, rental cars, cruises, and guided tours. The appeal is straightforward: AARP has negotiated group rates with travel companies, and members receive access to these disc
