Learn How to Transfer Money From PayPal to Bank

Understanding PayPal Account Types and Transfer Options

PayPal offers different account types, and each one has specific features related to transferring money to a bank account. The main account types are Personal and Business accounts. Personal accounts are designed for individual users who want to send money to friends and family or make purchases online. Business accounts are intended for people who run a business, accept payments from customers, or conduct regular commercial transactions. Understanding which type of account you have matters because the transfer process and any associated fees may differ between them.

When you transfer money from PayPal to your bank account, you're moving funds from your PayPal balance into a checking or savings account that you've linked to your PayPal account. PayPal calls this process a "withdrawal." The money doesn't move instantly in most cases—there are standard processing times that vary depending on your bank and the transfer method you choose. Most transfers take between one to five business days to appear in your bank account, though some faster options may be available for an additional fee.

PayPal provides several ways to move money out of your account. The standard method is a direct transfer to your linked bank account, which typically has no fee. Another option is transferring to a debit card, which also usually has no fee. Some users may have access to PayPal's instant transfer feature, which delivers money to your account in minutes rather than days, though this service may charge a small percentage of the amount transferred. A third option is requesting a check, though this is less common and takes longer than electronic transfers.

Before you can transfer money from PayPal to your bank, you need to have linked a bank account to your PayPal profile. This requires providing your bank's routing number and your account number. PayPal uses this information to verify your identity and confirm that you own the account. The verification process typically involves PayPal depositing small amounts into your bank account and asking you to confirm those amounts in your PayPal account settings.

Practical takeaway: Start by confirming your account type and reviewing which bank accounts you've already linked to your PayPal profile. You can check this in the "Wallet" or "Transfer Money" section of your PayPal account. If you haven't linked a bank account yet, gather your bank's routing number and your account number before proceeding with the linking process.

How to Link Your Bank Account to PayPal

Linking a bank account to PayPal is a necessary first step if you want to transfer money from PayPal to your bank. The process is straightforward and takes just a few minutes. You'll need to log into your PayPal account on a computer or mobile device and navigate to the settings or wallet area. Different versions of PayPal's website and app may organize these sections slightly differently, but they're typically labeled "Wallet," "Transfer Money," or "Settings."

To link your bank account, PayPal asks for specific information. You'll need your routing number, which is a nine-digit code that identifies your specific bank. Most banks display this number on the bottom left of your checks. Your account number, which is usually on the bottom center of your checks, is also required. Some users may need to provide their bank's name and address, though PayPal usually looks this up automatically once you enter your routing number. You'll also confirm the type of account—checking or savings—that you're linking.

After you provide this information, PayPal typically verifies your bank account through a process called microdeposits. PayPal deposits two small amounts (usually between one and three cents each) into your bank account. This process may take two to three business days. Once the deposits appear in your bank account, you'll return to PayPal and enter the exact amounts you see. This confirms that you own the bank account and have access to it. After PayPal confirms these amounts, your bank account becomes an active transfer destination.

PayPal's security measures include encryption of your banking information and compliance with federal banking regulations. Your routing and account numbers are stored securely and are only used to process transfers. PayPal does not share this information with third parties without your consent. If you're concerned about security, you can also link a debit card instead of a bank account, though transfers to bank accounts are generally preferred because they involve direct bank-to-bank communication with less intermediary involvement.

Some users experience delays in the verification process, particularly if their bank processes deposits on a different schedule. If you don't see the microdeposits within three to five business days, you may need to contact your bank to confirm that the deposits were received. Occasionally, banks may hold or block these small deposits if they appear unusual. If this happens, contacting your bank's customer service can help resolve the issue, and PayPal can sometimes initiate a new verification process.

Practical takeaway: Gather your routing number and account number before starting the linking process. You can find these on a blank check or by contacting your bank directly. If you don't have checks, most banks display this information in their online banking portal or mobile app under "Account Details" or "Account Information."

Step-by-Step Instructions for Transferring Money

Once your bank account is linked and verified with PayPal, transferring money is a straightforward process that can be completed in just a few steps. The exact steps may vary slightly depending on whether you're using PayPal's website or mobile app, but the general process is the same. Start by logging into your PayPal account. On the website, look for a "Wallet" tab or a "Transfer Money" option in the main menu. On the mobile app, these options are typically found in the menu at the bottom or side of the screen.

Once you access the transfer section, you'll see an option to transfer money to your bank. Click or tap this option, and PayPal will display your linked bank accounts. If you have multiple bank accounts linked, select the one where you want the money to be deposited. PayPal will then ask you to enter the amount you want to transfer. You can transfer any amount up to your current PayPal balance, though PayPal may have daily or monthly limits depending on your account history and activity level.

After entering the amount, PayPal displays the transfer details for your review. This screen shows the amount being transferred, the destination bank account, and the expected delivery date. This is your opportunity to verify that all information is correct before confirming the transfer. Check that the amount matches what you intended to transfer and that the bank account information is accurate. Once you've reviewed everything, click the button to confirm the transfer. Most versions of PayPal ask you to confirm twice—once when you enter the amount and again on a summary screen—to prevent accidental transfers.

After you confirm the transfer, PayPal displays a confirmation message with a reference number. You should note or save this reference number, as it can be used to track the transfer or contact PayPal if there are issues. The money is now in the transfer process. Depending on which transfer method was selected, it should appear in your bank account within one to five business days. During this time, the funds remain in your PayPal account but are marked as "pending transfer."

You can check the status of your transfer by returning to the transfer or wallet section and looking at your recent transactions or transfer history. This history shows all transfers you've made, including the date initiated, the amount, the destination account, and the current status. Once the money reaches your bank account, it will no longer appear as "pending" in your PayPal account.

Practical takeaway: Keep the confirmation number from your transfer for your records. If you're unsure whether a transfer has completed, wait at least five business days before contacting PayPal. Most transfers complete within this timeframe. You can also contact your bank to ask if a specific deposit from PayPal has been received if you want to check sooner.

Understanding Transfer Times, Fees, and Limits

The time it takes for money to move from PayPal to your bank account depends on several factors. Standard transfers, which are free, typically take one to five business days. This timeframe accounts for the time needed for PayPal to process the request and for your bank to receive and post the deposit. Business days are weekdays only—Monday through Friday—so a transfer initiated on a Friday may not complete until the following Wednesday or Thursday. Transfers initiated on weekends or holidays are placed in the queue and begin processing on the next business day.
