Learn How to Redeem Amazon Gift Cards

What Amazon Gift Cards Are and How They Work

Amazon Gift Cards are prepaid vouchers that hold monetary value and can be used to purchase items on Amazon.com or through the Amazon app. They function similarly to store credit, allowing customers to buy physical products, digital content, and services available through Amazon's platform. Understanding how these cards work is the foundation for successfully using them.

Amazon offers gift cards in several formats. Physical gift cards arrive as plastic cards in the mail with a unique code printed on the back. Digital gift cards come via email and contain a claim code that appears in the message. There are also special occasion gift cards with themed designs, and reload-able gift cards that allow users to add funds multiple times. Each type contains a code—either visible on the card or in an email—that represents the stored value.

When you redeem a gift card, its value is added to your Amazon account as store credit. This credit appears in your account balance and can be used for future purchases without needing to enter payment information each time. The balance remains in your account until spent, and there are no monthly fees or expiration dates on gift cards purchased after 2007, though very old cards may have different terms.

The value of gift cards ranges from small amounts (typically $15 or $25) to larger sums (up to $500 for single cards, with the ability to purchase multiple cards). Corporate and bulk options allow businesses to purchase large quantities of gift cards at once. Gift cards work on most Amazon purchases, including books, electronics, clothing, and Prime Video content, though some restricted items may not be available for purchase with gift card funds.

Practical Takeaway: Familiarize yourself with your specific gift card type—physical, digital, or reload-able—because the redemption process differs slightly, and knowing which you have prevents confusion during the claiming process.

Locating Your Amazon Gift Card Code

Before you can redeem an Amazon Gift Card, you need to find the claim code. This code is a long string of letters and numbers unique to that specific gift card. The location of this code depends on the format of your gift card, and finding it correctly is crucial because entering the wrong code will not work.

For physical gift cards received in the mail, the claim code appears on the back of the card. Look for a 14-character alphanumeric code, usually printed in a specific section of the card's back side. Some physical cards have the code hidden under a scratch-off panel similar to lottery tickets. If your card has this panel, carefully scratch it off to reveal the code beneath. Be gentle during this process to avoid damaging the code itself. The code should be clearly visible once the panel is removed.

Digital gift cards sent via email contain the claim code within the email message body. The code typically appears in a highlighted section or within a button labeled "Redeem" or "Claim Now." If you received the email from Amazon or a friend, check the main email body first. If you cannot find it in the initial email, check your email's spam or promotions folder, as gift card emails sometimes filter there by mistake. The email may also include instructions for redemption alongside the code.

If you have purchased a gift card and received a receipt, the claim code may also appear on that receipt. Corporate gift cards or those purchased in bulk sometimes have codes listed in confirmation emails or separate documentation. Mobile apps may display the code differently than websites. If you're viewing a gift card through your Amazon account, the code may be listed under "Gift Cards" or "Account & Lists" in your account settings.

Screenshot or write down the code in a safe place if you're using a physical card, as you'll need to reference it during redemption. For digital codes, you can simply keep the email open or copy the code to a notes app for easy reference.

Practical Takeaway: The claim code is your gift card's access key—write it down or take a photo of it before attempting redemption to prevent errors and repeated searching for the code.

Step-by-Step Redemption Process on Amazon.com

Redeeming an Amazon Gift Card through the website is a straightforward process that takes only a few minutes. This method works for both physical and digital gift cards, and the steps are largely the same regardless of which format you have.

Begin by visiting Amazon.com and signing into your account using your username and password. If you do not have an Amazon account, you will need to create one first by providing an email address, password, and basic information. Once logged in, navigate to the gift card section. On the Amazon homepage, look for "Gift Cards" in the top menu or search bar. You can also reach it by going to "Account & Lists" in the upper right corner, then selecting "Your Account," and finding "Gift Cards" within the account menu.

In the Gift Cards section, look for a link or button that says "Redeem a Gift Card" or "Claim a Gift Card Code." Click this button to open the redemption form. You will see a text box asking you to enter your claim code. This is where you input the 14-character code from your physical card's back or the code from your digital email. Type or paste the code carefully, ensuring there are no extra spaces or typos. The code is case-insensitive, meaning capital and lowercase letters are treated the same, but the numbers and letters must be exact.

After entering the code, click the "Redeem" or "Apply to Your Account" button. Amazon will process the code and, if valid, add the gift card's value to your account balance. You will see a confirmation message showing the amount that was added. The funds now appear as store credit in your account and are immediately available for use on any eligible purchase.

If you encounter an error message, verify that you've entered the code correctly. Common issues include accidentally including spaces, using the letter "O" instead of the number "0," or including the card's physical borders in the code. Try re-entering the code or copying and pasting it to reduce errors.

Practical Takeaway: Complete the redemption process on a computer or browser where you can carefully see and type the code, as this reduces errors compared to typing on a small mobile keyboard.

Redeeming Gift Cards Through the Amazon Mobile App

The Amazon mobile app offers an alternative method for redeeming gift cards that can be more convenient if you're already using the app on your phone or tablet. The process is similar to the website version but follows the app's layout and navigation.

Open the Amazon app on your device and sign into your account if you are not already logged in. Tap the menu icon (usually three horizontal lines) located at the bottom right of the screen on iPhones or the top left on Android devices. From the menu options, look for "Account" or "Your Account." Within your account settings, locate "Gift Cards" or "Gift Cards & Promotional Codes." The exact wording may vary depending on your device type and app version, but it will be in the account section.

Once you've found the Gift Cards section, tap on "Redeem a Gift Card" or a similar button. The app will open a text entry field where you can input your claim code. You can type the code manually or, on many mobile devices, use the camera function if your app offers it. Some versions of the Amazon app include a camera scan feature that allows you to point your phone's camera at the code on a physical gift card, and the app automatically reads and enters the code for you. This feature, when available, significantly reduces the chance of typing errors.

Enter your code and tap "Redeem" or "Apply to Your Account." Within seconds, you should receive a confirmation that the gift card has been redeemed and the amount has been added to your account balance. The confirmation will display the dollar amount added and may provide an option to proceed directly to shopping.

One advantage of using the app is that you may be able to scan a physical gift card's code directly using your phone's camera, which is faster and more accurate than typing. However, if the camera feature is not working or unavailable, you can always type the code manually. The app stores your account information, so if you've previously redeemed gift cards, the app may remember the process and make it even faster on subsequent attempts.

Practical Takeaway: If your Amazon app version includes a camera scan feature, use it to read physical gift card codes—this method is faster and eliminates typing errors.
