Learn How Fetch Points Work and Rewards

What Are Fetch Points and How They Start Accumulating

Fetch Rewards is a mobile app and loyalty program that lets you earn points by purchasing everyday products. The program works by having you scan receipts from grocery stores, gas stations, drugstores, and other retailers. When you scan a receipt with the Fetch app, the system identifies your purchases and awards you points based on what you bought. These points accumulate in your account over time and can be converted into gift cards or other rewards.

The basic earning mechanism is straightforward. After you make a purchase at any participating retailer, you keep your receipt. You then open the Fetch app on your phone and scan the barcode on your receipt using your phone's camera. The app reads the receipt data and searches its database for qualifying purchases. Within seconds to a few minutes, the app displays how many points you've earned and adds them to your account balance. There's no coupon clipping, no special membership requirements, and no need to buy specific branded items to start earning—though certain products offer bonus point opportunities.

One important aspect is that Fetch Rewards partners with thousands of retailers nationwide. This includes major grocery chains, regional supermarkets, convenience stores, and specialty retailers. The program doesn't require you to shop at any particular store; you can shop wherever you normally do and still earn points by scanning receipts. Each receipt you submit becomes part of your earning history, and points add up across all your purchases regardless of location.

The program is completely free to join and use. There are no membership fees, subscription costs, or hidden charges. You download the app, create an account with basic information, and can start scanning receipts immediately. This zero-cost structure means anyone can participate without financial risk.

Practical takeaway: Start by downloading the Fetch app, creating your account, and saving your receipts from your next few shopping trips. You can begin scanning receipts right away to understand how the point system works in your specific situation.

Understanding Point Values and Earning Rates

Fetch Rewards doesn't assign a fixed point value to every purchase. Instead, the number of points you earn varies based on several factors. Most regular purchases earn a small number of points—often between 1 and 5 points per receipt. The app's algorithm appears to weight points based on the total purchase amount, specific product categories, and items that Fetch is promoting at any given time.

The earning structure includes what Fetch calls "featured items" or promotional items. These are specific products or brands that offer bonus points during certain time periods. For example, if a cereal brand is running a promotion, buying that cereal might earn you 50 bonus points instead of the standard 1-2 points. These promotions change regularly—sometimes weekly or bi-weekly—and are displayed prominently in the app. Checking the app's deals section before you shop can help you make purchasing decisions that maximize your points earning potential.

Receipt totals also influence point accumulation. Larger purchase amounts typically generate more points than smaller transactions. A $100 grocery receipt might earn you 50-100 points, while a $20 convenience store purchase might earn 10-20 points. However, this isn't a linear relationship, and the exact calculation isn't publicly disclosed by Fetch. The company uses data analysis to assign point values, which means the same product might earn different points depending on when and where you purchase it.

Some receipts earn zero points, even though you scanned them successfully. This happens when your receipt contains only items that don't currently offer point rewards. This is normal and expected; not every item in a store qualifies for Fetch points. Additionally, certain receipt types—such as returns or exchanges—may not generate points. Understanding that point earning is variable rather than guaranteed helps set realistic expectations about how quickly you'll accumulate rewards.

Practical takeaway: Check the Fetch app's featured items section before shopping and notice which product categories tend to earn the most points in your area. Keep track of your point-earning patterns over several weeks to understand what earns more versus less in your shopping habits.

Receipt Scanning Best Practices and Common Issues

Successful receipt scanning depends on receipt quality and proper technique. Receipts must be legible, with clear printing and visible product information. Thermal paper receipts—the thin, slightly shiny paper most retailers use—work fine as long as they're not faded or damaged. Receipts that have been crumpled, wet, or exposed to heat may become unreadable and won't scan properly. Storing receipts in a clean, dry place until you scan them helps maintain their quality.

When scanning, proper lighting and phone positioning matter. Hold your phone at a slight angle above the receipt—not straight down—to avoid glare and reflections. Good lighting conditions help the app's camera read the barcode and receipt details clearly. If you're in poor lighting, move to a brighter location or use your phone's flash. The app will typically display a confirmation message once it successfully reads your receipt, showing the retailer name and purchase total.

Certain technical issues can prevent successful scanning. Sometimes the app fails to recognize a receipt barcode on the first attempt. If this happens, try scanning again from a different angle or in different lighting. If scanning still fails, the app usually offers an option to manually enter receipt information by typing the retailer name and purchase total. This manual entry option ensures you can submit receipts even if the barcode scan doesn't work.

Receipt timing also matters. Fetch typically requires you to scan receipts within a certain timeframe of purchase—usually 14 days, though this can vary. Scanning receipts promptly after purchase is the safest approach. Additionally, you should keep your physical receipt until the points have been awarded and appear in your account, in case Fetch needs to verify information. Some users keep receipts for 30 days as a standard practice.

Practical takeaway: Develop a simple system for organizing receipts—a small envelope or folder—and scan them within a few days of purchase. This prevents you from losing receipts and ensures timely point crediting.

Redeeming Points for Rewards and Gift Cards

Once you've accumulated points, you can convert them into rewards through the Fetch app. The most common reward option is gift cards to major retailers and restaurants. Common gift card options include Target, Amazon, Walmart, Ulta Beauty, Chipotle, Starbucks, and many others. The specific gift cards available may vary by region and change over time based on partnerships.

Each gift card has a point cost associated with it. A $5 Amazon gift card might cost 2,500 points, while a $10 target card might cost 3,000 points. These point-to-value ratios vary and aren't always proportional—meaning 2,500 points for $5 gives you a different rate of return than 3,000 points for $10. The app displays the point cost clearly before you confirm your redemption, so you can compare options and decide which rewards offer the best value based on your point balance and preferences.

The redemption process itself is simple. You select the gift card you want, confirm the redemption, and the points are deducted from your account immediately. Digital gift cards are typically delivered to your email within minutes to hours. Physical gift cards, if available for certain options, take longer to arrive but come through standard mail. You can then use these gift cards for purchases at the respective retailers just like you would a gift card purchased with cash.

In addition to gift cards, Fetch occasionally offers other reward options. These might include entries into prize drawings, discounts on future Fetch-related offers, or transfers to charitable causes. However, gift cards remain the primary reward mechanism. Most users find that cashing out for small gift cards frequently keeps the program engaging, while others accumulate points for larger gift card denominations.

Practical takeaway: Before redeeming, compare the point-to-dollar ratios of different gift cards available in the app. Redeem for cards from retailers where you already plan to shop to maximize the practical value of your earned points.

Strategies to Maximize Your Point Earnings

While Fetch points accumulate naturally through regular shopping, certain strategies can help you earn more. The first strategy is regularly checking the app's featured items section. Fetch updates promotional items frequently, and deliberately purchasing these items substantially increases your earning rate. If you normally buy cereal and a cereal brand is offering 50-100 bonus points, purchasing during that promotion could triple or quadruple
