Understanding Neuropathy: What It Is and How It Develops

Neuropathy, also called peripheral neuropathy, is a condition where nerves in your body become damaged or stop working properly. Your nerves carry messages between your brain, spinal cord, and the rest of your body. When these nerves are damaged, those messages get disrupted, which can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling—usually in your hands and feet.

There are over 100 different types of neuropathy, and they develop in different ways. Some develop slowly over months or years, while others come on suddenly. The damage can affect just one nerve, a few nerves, or many nerves throughout your body.

Common causes of neuropathy include diabetes, infections, injuries, certain medications, vitamin deficiencies, and inherited conditions. Diabetes is the most common cause in the United States—about 60% to 70% of people with diabetes develop some form of neuropathy. Other causes include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, Lyme disease, chemotherapy treatments, and low vitamin B12 levels.

Symptoms vary depending on which nerves are affected. If sensory nerves are damaged, you might feel numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. If motor nerves are damaged, you might experience weakness or trouble moving. Some people have only mild symptoms, while others have severe pain that interferes with daily activities. Symptoms may start in one area and spread, or they may remain in one location.

The progression of neuropathy differs from person to person. In some cases, if the underlying cause is treated (like controlling blood sugar in diabetes), neuropathy may stop getting worse or even improve. In other cases, neuropathy is permanent but can be managed with treatment and lifestyle changes. Understanding your specific type of neuropathy and its cause is important for managing the condition effectively.

Practical takeaway: Keep detailed records of when your symptoms started, what they feel like, and what makes them better or worse. This information helps doctors understand your condition and can be valuable if you need to document how neuropathy affects your life.

How Neuropathy Affects Daily Life and Work Capacity

Neuropathy can significantly impact a person's ability to perform everyday tasks and maintain employment. The effects depend on the severity of the condition and which nerves are affected. Some people with mild neuropathy work full-time without major interruptions, while others find it impossible to continue their jobs due to pain, weakness, or loss of function.

Physical impacts include difficulty walking, problems with balance and coordination, weakness in hands and arms, and chronic pain that can be disabling. If you have neuropathy in your feet, you might struggle with activities like walking long distances, standing for extended periods, or using stairs. If it affects your hands, tasks like typing, gripping tools, writing, or handling small objects become difficult or painful.

Neuropathy also creates invisible challenges. Many people experience sleep disruption because nighttime pain or tingling keeps them awake. Poor sleep leads to fatigue, reduced concentration, and difficulty focusing on work. Some people develop depression or anxiety related to chronic pain and reduced quality of life. These mental health effects are real medical consequences of living with neuropathy.

Workplace impacts vary by job type. Someone with neuropathy in their feet might struggle as a nurse, retail worker, or construction worker who stands all day. Someone with hand neuropathy might struggle as a mechanic, surgeon, or office worker. Even jobs that seem less demanding can become difficult—sitting for long periods can be painful, and stress often makes neuropathy symptoms worse.

The unpredictability of neuropathy adds another layer of difficulty. Some days are better than others. A person might be able to work full-time one week but need to take the next week off due to pain flare-ups. This inconsistency makes it hard to maintain regular employment, and employers often cannot accommodate frequent, unpredictable absences.

Practical takeaway: Document how neuropathy affects your specific job duties. Write down tasks you can no longer do, how often you need breaks, and any modifications you need to continue working. This record becomes important if you need to explore disability programs.

Social Security Disability Programs and Basic Requirements

The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates two separate disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both provide monthly payments to individuals with disabling conditions, but they have different rules and requirements.

SSDI is based on your work history. You build credits toward SSDI by working and paying Social Security taxes. To be considered for SSDI, you must have earned enough work credits and have a condition that prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA). As of 2024, SGA is defined as earning more than $1,550 per month (or $2,590 if you are blind). You must also have a condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.

SSI is a needs-based program for people with low income and limited resources. You do not need a work history to receive SSI. Instead, your monthly income must be below certain limits, and your resources (savings, property, investments) must be below $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. SSI also requires that your condition prevents substantial gainful activity and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.

Both programs require that your condition be documented through medical evidence. This means you need medical records from doctors who have examined you, test results, imaging studies, and descriptions of your symptoms and limitations. The SSA does not make decisions based on what you say alone—they need objective medical evidence from healthcare providers.

The SSA uses a five-step sequential evaluation process to determine whether someone meets disability criteria. This process considers your age, education, work experience, residual functional capacity (what you can still do despite your condition), and whether work exists in the national economy that you could perform. Neuropathy cases are evaluated based on the specific symptoms, severity, and how they affect your ability to work.

Practical takeaway: Determine which program you might explore by examining your work history. If you have worked and paid Social Security taxes, you may be able to explore SSDI. If you have limited work history or resources, SSI may be relevant. Understanding the difference helps you gather the right information.

Medical Evidence Requirements for Neuropathy Cases

Medical evidence is the foundation of any disability claim related to neuropathy. The SSA will not make a disability determination without documented medical evidence from qualified healthcare providers. This evidence must show that your neuropathy exists, how severe it is, and how it limits your ability to work.

Essential medical records include initial diagnosis documentation showing when neuropathy was first diagnosed, what testing confirmed it, and what the underlying cause is. For diabetes-related neuropathy, this means records showing your diabetes diagnosis and blood sugar levels. For other causes, records should explain what caused the neuropathy. Ongoing treatment records demonstrate that you are managing the condition—doctor visits, test results, medication adjustments, and therapy notes all matter.

Specific testing results strengthen a neuropathy case. Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the most commonly used tests—these measure electrical activity in muscles and how well nerves send signals. These objective tests show the degree of nerve damage. Other tests may include blood work, MRI imaging, skin biopsy, or other specialized testing depending on the type of neuropathy.

Functional limitation statements from your doctors are critical. Your healthcare providers should document what you cannot do because of neuropathy. Can you walk more than a certain distance? Can you stand for extended periods? Can you use your hands to perform fine motor tasks? Can you climb stairs? Can you maintain concentration given pain levels? These detailed descriptions of limitations are more valuable than a simple statement that you have neuropathy.

If you see multiple doctors—a primary care doctor, a neurologist, and specialists—gather records from all of them. The SSA looks at the whole medical picture. Consistency across providers strengthens your case. If different doctors report contradictory information, the SSA may request clarification or additional testing.

Treatment compliance also matters. If your doctors recommended treatment or medications and you did not follow those recommendations, the SSA may conclude your condition could improve with better compliance. Document any reasons you could not follow treatment recommendations
