Growing Lemons From Seed and Sapling Guide

Understanding Lemon Plant Basics and Varieties

Lemon trees belong to the citrus family and thrive in warm climates with plenty of sunlight. Before starting your lemon growing journey, it's important to understand the different varieties available and their characteristics. Common lemon varieties include the Eureka lemon, which produces fruit year-round and grows well in containers; the Lisbon lemon, known for juicy, seedless fruit and cold hardiness; and the Meyer lemon, a smaller variety that's sweeter and grows well indoors. Each variety has different growing requirements and timelines.

Lemon trees grown from seed typically take longer to produce fruit than grafted saplings—usually 3 to 6 years or more before the first harvest. This delayed fruiting happens because seed-grown trees need time to mature. Additionally, lemons grown from seed may not produce identical fruit to the parent tree since they're grown from cross-pollination rather than genetic clones. Despite this, growing from seed remains a rewarding project for home gardeners interested in the complete growing experience.

The climate requirements for lemon trees are specific. They need temperatures between 70 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing season and should not be exposed to freezing temperatures for extended periods. In colder regions, growing lemons in containers allows you to move them indoors during winter. Lemon trees require well-draining soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. They also need significant sunlight—at least 8 hours daily, with 12 to 16 hours being ideal for optimal growth and fruit production.

Practical takeaway: Research your local climate zone and determine whether outdoor growing or container gardening suits your region. If you live in USDA zones 9 to 11, outdoor growing is feasible. For colder zones, plan to grow lemon trees in containers that can be moved indoors during winter months.

Extracting and Preparing Lemon Seeds for Planting

Starting lemon trees from seed begins with selecting quality seeds from healthy, mature lemons. Choose organic lemons when possible, as they haven't been treated with fungicides that might inhibit germination. Cut open a fresh lemon and extract the seeds carefully, then rinse them under cool water to remove the fruit pulp and any residue. Pat the seeds dry with a paper towel. Fresh seeds have higher germination rates than older seeds, so use them within a few weeks of extraction if possible. Seeds stored in a cool, dry place can remain viable for several months, though germination rates decrease over time.

Seed preparation involves a process called stratification, which mimics the natural conditions seeds experience in nature. Wrap your lemon seeds in a damp paper towel or place them in a container with moist sand or peat moss. Store this in the refrigerator at temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for 4 to 6 weeks. This cold, moist period helps break seed dormancy and increases germination rates. Some gardeners report germination rates as high as 70 to 80 percent after proper stratification, compared to 20 to 30 percent without it.

Before planting, inspect seeds and discard any that are cracked, shriveled, or show signs of mold. Viable seeds typically feel firm and have a smooth surface. You can perform a float test by placing seeds in water—seeds that sink are generally viable, while those that float may have reduced viability. Prepare a germination medium by mixing equal parts peat moss and perlite or using commercial seed-starting mix. This medium should be moist but not waterlogged, as excess moisture encourages fungal growth that can rot seeds.

Practical takeaway: Extract and prepare seeds from 15 to 20 lemons if possible. This provides backup seeds in case some fail to germinate. Proper stratification significantly increases your success rate, so invest the time to refrigerate seeds for the full 4 to 6 week period rather than rushing directly to planting.

Germination Process and Early Seedling Care

After stratification, plant your prepared seeds about one-half inch deep in the germination medium. Plant each seed in a small container, such as a 2-inch seed pot or cell, to minimize transplant shock later. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy—a moisture level similar to a wrung-out sponge works well. Place the containers in a warm location with temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Bottom heat from a seed heating mat can accelerate germination, which typically occurs within 2 to 4 weeks, though some seeds may take up to 8 weeks.

Provide indirect light once seedlings emerge. Newly sprouted seeds don't require intense light immediately, but they do need brightness to prevent becoming leggy or stretched. After seedlings develop their first true leaves (the second set of leaves that appear), move them to a location with bright, indirect light or place them under grow lights positioned 6 to 12 inches above the plants. Seedlings need 12 to 14 hours of light daily for healthy development. Rotate containers every few days to ensure even light exposure and prevent uneven growth.

Watering seedlings requires careful attention. The soil should remain moist but never waterlogged. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer with your finger—if it feels dry, water gently until moisture appears at the drainage holes. Overwatering causes damping-off disease, a fungal infection that kills seedlings at the soil line. To prevent this, use a spray bottle for gentle watering and ensure containers have proper drainage holes. As seedlings grow, you can gradually increase watering frequency but maintain the same moisture level principle.

Practical takeaway: Use a heat mat and grow lights to optimize germination and early growth. Monitor soil moisture daily by hand rather than relying on a watering schedule, as containers dry at different rates depending on humidity and temperature. Remove any seedlings showing signs of disease—wilting, discoloration, or soft stems—immediately to prevent spread to healthy plants.

Transplanting Seedlings to Larger Containers

When seedlings develop their first true leaves and reach 2 to 3 inches in height, they're ready for their first transplant into larger containers. Use 4 to 6-inch pots filled with a potting mix designed for citrus or a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and compost in equal parts. Gently remove seedlings from their original containers, handling them by their leaves rather than the delicate stem. Create a small hole in the new potting mix and position the seedling at the same depth it was growing previously—burying the stem deeper can lead to rot. Gently firm soil around the base and water thoroughly.

Spacing and light remain important during this growth phase. Place transplanted seedlings in bright, indirect light for the first few days to allow them to recover from transplant shock. After this adjustment period, move them to a location with 12 to 16 hours of direct light daily. If using grow lights, maintain them 6 to 12 inches above the plants and adjust height as seedlings grow. During this stage, seedlings can tolerate and benefit from slightly stronger light than earlier stages. Maintain temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and slightly cooler at night.

Fertilizing begins approximately 4 to 6 weeks after transplanting, once seedlings have established themselves in the new soil. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength, applied every 2 to 3 weeks. As seedlings mature into young plants, you may increase fertilizer concentration to full strength. Citrus plants require specific nutrients—nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root development, and potassium for overall plant health. Many commercial citrus fertilizers have a ratio of approximately 6:4:6 (NPK), which works well for young lemon plants.

Practical takeaway: Plan your first transplant when seedlings reach the two true-leaf stage. Water well before transplanting to reduce damage to roots and soil. Keep a transplant record noting the date and seedling size, which helps you track growth progress and time future potting up appropriately.
