Free Guide to Preparing for Your Veterinary Clinic Visit

Gather Your Pet's Medical Records Before Your Visit

One of the most helpful things you can do to prepare for a veterinary clinic visit is to collect your pet's medical history in advance. If your pet has seen a veterinarian before, contact that clinic and request copies of previous records. These documents provide valuable information about your pet's past health issues, vaccinations, surgeries, and treatments that help your current veterinarian understand your animal's complete health picture.

Medical records typically include vaccination dates, which are crucial for your veterinarian to review. Veterinarians need to know when your pet last received vaccines such as rabies, DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza), or FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia) for cats. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, about 85% of pet owners keep their pets' vaccination records at home or with their veterinarian, but many don't bring this information to appointments. Having these records readily available prevents duplicate vaccines and helps your veterinarian create an appropriate vaccination schedule.

If your pet is on any medications, write down the names, dosages, and how often you give them. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter products, supplements, and flea or tick prevention products. Bring the actual bottles if possible, as the labels contain important information. Your veterinarian needs to know about all medications to check for potential interactions and to ensure treatments won't conflict with any procedures or new medications prescribed during the visit.

For pets with chronic conditions like diabetes, thyroid disease, or arthritis, gather recent test results or lab work. These results help your veterinarian monitor how well current treatments are working. If your pet has had X-rays, ultrasounds, or other imaging done previously, ask if you can obtain copies or at least ask about the findings to share with your new veterinarian.

Practical Takeaway: Create a simple folder or digital file containing your pet's vaccination records, medication list, and previous veterinary reports. Call your pet's previous veterinary clinic at least one week before your appointment to request records, allowing time for the clinic to prepare and send this information.

Document Your Pet's Current Health Concerns and Symptoms

Before arriving at your veterinary appointment, spend time observing and noting your pet's symptoms and behavior changes. Write down specific details about what you've noticed, including when symptoms started, how often they occur, and how severe they are. Veterinarians rely heavily on information from pet owners since they can only observe your pet for a short time during the visit. The more detailed your observations, the more your veterinarian can narrow down potential causes.

For digestive issues, document specifics like how many times per day your pet vomits or has diarrhea, whether there's blood in the stool, changes in appetite, and any patterns you notice. For example, noting "vomiting after eating meals" is more helpful than simply saying "vomiting." If your pet is limping or showing signs of pain, describe which leg is affected, whether the limp is worse after activity or rest, and if you notice any swelling. These details matter significantly in diagnosis.

Note any changes in your pet's behavior, energy level, or bathroom habits. Has your cat started urinating outside the litter box? Is your dog suddenly drinking much more water than usual? These observations can indicate serious conditions like urinary tract infections, diabetes, or kidney disease. Keep a small notebook or use your phone to jot down observations for a few days before the appointment. Research shows that written notes help pet owners communicate more clearly with veterinarians and reduce appointment time spent recalling details.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency symptom like difficulty breathing, bleeding, collapse, or inability to eat or drink, do not wait for a scheduled appointment. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately. However, for non-emergency concerns, detailed notes help your regular veterinarian provide the best care. Include information about your pet's diet, recent changes in food or treats, any exposure to other animals, travel history, and access to outdoor environments or toxins.

Practical Takeaway: Create a symptom checklist for the week before your appointment. Include the date symptoms started, frequency, severity on a scale of 1-10, and any factors that make symptoms better or worse. Bring this written list to your appointment so you don't forget important details during the visit.

Prepare Information About Your Pet's Diet and Environment

Your veterinarian often asks detailed questions about your pet's diet and living environment because these factors significantly influence health. Before your appointment, gather information about what you feed your pet, including the specific brand, type (dry kibble, wet food, raw, home-cooked), and how much you feed daily. If you've recently changed your pet's food, note when the change occurred and what the previous food was. Many health issues including digestive problems, allergies, and weight changes relate directly to diet.

Be prepared to discuss treats, table scraps, and any human food your pet consumes. Many pet owners underestimate how much food their pets eat outside of meals, and this information affects nutrition assessment and weight management. If your pet has food allergies or sensitivities, document which foods trigger reactions and what those reactions look like. If you don't know the exact ingredients in your pet's food, bring the bag or package to the appointment so your veterinarian can review the label.

Information about your pet's living situation helps your veterinarian identify environmental health risks. Document details like whether your pet lives primarily indoors or outdoors, if they have access to yards or parks, whether they interact with other animals, and if anyone in your household has recently been sick. According to the CDC, pets living in multi-pet households face higher risks of transmitting parasites and infectious diseases, so this context matters for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Describe any recent environmental changes like moving to a new home, travel, or exposure to new areas. Pets can pick up parasites or infectious diseases from outdoor environments, so knowing where your pet has been recently helps your veterinarian determine what testing or treatment might be necessary. If your pet spends time in boarding facilities, dog parks, or grooming facilities, mention this as these communal spaces increase exposure to contagious conditions. Also note your pet's exercise level and any significant changes, as activity level influences weight, joint health, and overall fitness.

Practical Takeaway: Photograph or bring the food and treat labels from your pet's current diet to the appointment. Write down your pet's typical daily routine including wake-up time, feeding times, exercise periods, and sleep schedule. This routine information helps your veterinarian understand your pet's lifestyle and identify potential health issues related to activity or feeding patterns.

Know Your Pet's Behavioral Baseline and Temperament

Understanding your pet's normal behavior helps your veterinarian recognize when something is truly abnormal. Bring information about your pet's typical temperament, including whether they're naturally anxious, calm, aggressive, social, or shy. This baseline helps your veterinarian distinguish between genuine behavioral changes that might indicate illness and simply your pet's normal personality. For instance, if your dog is normally very social but has suddenly become withdrawn and doesn't want to play, that's a meaningful symptom. If your cat is naturally aloof, being aloof isn't necessarily a sign of illness.

Describe any past behavioral issues your pet has experienced, including aggression, excessive barking or meowing, destructive behavior, or anxiety. Let your veterinarian know how your pet typically responds to handling, examinations, and veterinary procedures. Some pets become very stressed at the veterinary clinic, which can make examination more difficult and can artificially elevate vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure. If your pet has a history of anxiety at the vet clinic, mention this so your veterinarian can potentially address it—some clinics offer calming medications before stressful visits, or your veterinarian might recommend techniques to reduce your pet's anxiety.

If your pet has shown aggression toward people or other animals, provide specific details about triggers and past incidents. This information is important for your veterinarian's safety and your pet's safety during the examination. Many veterinary clinics ask about aggression history in their intake forms, but providing additional context helps the staff handle your pet appropriately. For example, stating "my dog shows resource guarding around food" tells your veterinarian to be cautious when handling your pet near the mouth or stomach area.

Document any fear triggers your pet has, like fear of certain sounds, objects, or situations.
