Close Your Huntington Bank Account Guide

Understanding Huntington Bank Account Closure Basics

Closing a bank account is a straightforward process, though it requires attention to several important details. Huntington Bank, which operates over 770 branches across the United States, maintains specific procedures for customers who want to close their accounts. Understanding what closing an account means and what happens to your money is the first step in this process.

When you close a bank account, you are permanently ending that account relationship with the bank. Any remaining balance in your account must be withdrawn or transferred elsewhere. The bank will typically stop processing transactions on that account once it is closed. According to industry data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, approximately 20% of Americans change banks or close accounts in any given year, making account closure a common banking activity.

Huntington Bank offers several types of accounts, including checking accounts, savings accounts, and money market accounts. Each account type may have slightly different closure procedures, though the general steps remain similar. If you have a joint account—an account held by two or more people—all account holders typically need to agree to the closure, or one party may need authorization from the others.

Before closing your account, consider whether you have any automatic payments or direct deposits linked to it. These transactions will stop once the account closes, which could cause problems if you forget to update them with your new financial institution. Additionally, some accounts may have minimum balance requirements or early closure fees, depending on your specific account type and how long you have held it.

Practical Takeaway: Review your account documents or contact Huntington Bank to understand what type of account you hold and what specific terms apply to closing it. Create a checklist of automatic payments and direct deposits that use this account so you can transfer them before closing.

Steps to Close Your Huntington Bank Account

Closing a Huntington Bank account can be done through several methods, each with its own advantages. The most direct approach is to visit a Huntington Bank branch in person. This method allows you to speak with a bank representative who can walk you through the process, answer questions, and ensure all steps are completed correctly. When visiting a branch, bring a valid government-issued photo ID to verify your identity.

To close your account in person, locate your nearest Huntington Bank branch using their website or by calling their customer service line at 1-800-480-2265. Once at the branch, ask to speak with a representative about closing your account. They will ask you to verify your identity and confirm that you want to proceed with the closure. The representative will then provide information about your current balance and discuss options for receiving those funds.

If visiting a branch is inconvenient, you can close your account by telephone. Call Huntington Bank's customer service number and explain that you want to close your account. A representative will verify your identity by asking you to confirm personal information associated with the account. They can discuss your balance and help arrange for funds to be transferred or mailed to you. This method typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Some customers prefer to close accounts by mail. Write a letter to your local Huntington Bank branch clearly stating your name, account number, and request to close the account. Include a copy of your ID. However, this method takes longer—typically 7 to 14 business days—because the bank must process your written request and verify your identity through traditional mail.

Regardless of which method you choose, ensure your account balance is zero or nearly zero before closure. If there is a remaining balance, the bank can transfer it to another account you own at Huntington, mail you a check, or in some cases, wire the funds to another financial institution.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the closure method that fits your schedule and comfort level. If you have questions about your account or potential fees, calling customer service before visiting or mailing your request can save time and prevent confusion during the closure process.

Preparing Your Account Before Closure

Proper preparation before closing your Huntington Bank account prevents problems after the closure is complete. The most critical step is identifying and stopping all automatic payments and recurring transactions linked to your account. These might include utility bills, subscription services, insurance premiums, gym memberships, loan payments, or other regular charges.

Start by reviewing your recent bank statements from the past three months. Look for any recurring charges or payments you may have authorized. Make a written list of every automatic payment you find. For each one, contact the company or service provider and update your payment information to reflect your new bank account details or payment method. Examples include:

• Utility companies (electricity, gas, water)
• Insurance providers (auto, home, health)
• Subscription services (streaming platforms, software, newspapers)
• Loan servicers (mortgage, car, student loans)
• Childcare facilities
• Phone and internet providers

Similarly, update any direct deposits that go into this account. If your employer deposits your paycheck into this Huntington account, contact your employer's payroll department and provide information for your new bank account. The same applies if you receive regular government benefits, such as Social Security, unemployment, or tax refunds, which are typically deposited electronically.

Pay off any outstanding checks you have written from this account. Outstanding checks are checks you have written but that have not yet been deposited by the recipient. Once your account closes, any outstanding checks will bounce if they are deposited after closure. Contact anyone you recently wrote checks to and arrange alternative payment methods if necessary.

Review whether you have any linked accounts. Some people link savings accounts to checking accounts, or link accounts at different banks. Huntington Bank may allow you to transfer funds between linked accounts during the closure process. Decide how you want to handle any money in linked accounts before closing.

Practical Takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing all automatic payments and direct deposits, including the company name, the amount charged or deposited, and the frequency. Update each one at least 5 to 7 business days before closing your account to allow time for changes to process.

Handling Your Account Balance and Receiving Funds

Your bank account balance must reach zero before your account can be officially closed. This means withdrawing or transferring all remaining money in your account. Understanding your options for what happens to your funds is important for protecting your money and ensuring it reaches your intended destination.

The most common option is to transfer your balance to another Huntington Bank account you own. If you maintain a savings account or a different checking account with Huntington, you can request that your balance be transferred to that account. This is typically the fastest option and incurs no fees. The transfer usually occurs within one or two business days.

If you want to move your funds to a different bank, you have several options. You can request that Huntington Bank send you a check. The check will be mailed to the address associated with your account, and it typically arrives within 5 to 10 business days. Keep this check in a safe place until you can deposit it into your new account. Checks can be lost in the mail, so consider requesting a check amount that does not exceed $5,000 if you are concerned about security.

Alternatively, Huntington Bank may offer to wire your funds directly to another bank account. A wire transfer is an electronic movement of money from one bank to another. This method is faster than receiving a check but may involve a wire transfer fee—typically ranging from $15 to $25, depending on the circumstances. Ask the bank representative whether a fee applies before authorizing a wire transfer.

If your account balance is very small—under $25, for example—some banks may keep the funds for a limited time in case you change your mind. However, it is best to confirm with Huntington exactly what will happen to small balances. Some banks donate unclaimed funds to charity after a set period, while others return them to the account holder by check.

Never leave an account "open" after closure because you forgot to move money out. Banks typically send statements for closed accounts for at least one month, allowing you to monitor whether any unexpected charges appear. Review these final statements carefully to confirm that the closure was processed correctly.

Practical Takeaway: Decide before you close your account whether you want your balance transferred to another Huntington account, mailed as a check, or wired to another bank. Have your new bank's routing number and account number ready if you choose a wire transfer,
