Check Your SEVIS Status Information Guide

Understanding SEVIS and Why Status Matters

SEVIS stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. It is a U.S. government database that tracks international students and exchange visitors in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State created and maintain SEVIS to monitor the status of people studying or participating in exchange programs at approved schools and organizations.

SEVIS records contain important details about your immigration status, your school or program, your program dates, and your authorized activities in the United States. Being in valid SEVIS status means that your information in the system matches your actual situation—you are enrolled at your school, you are pursuing the program you said you would pursue, and you are following the rules that apply to your visa type.

Why does this matter? Your SEVIS status directly affects your ability to remain lawfully in the United States. If your SEVIS record becomes inactive or contains errors, it can cause serious problems. You might not be able to extend your visa, travel outside the U.S. and return, or work in positions that your visa type permits. Employers sometimes check SEVIS status before hiring international workers. Schools use SEVIS information to track whether students are maintaining full-time enrollment. Understanding your SEVIS status helps you stay in compliance with U.S. immigration law.

SEVIS status is separate from your visa status. Your visa is a stamp or document in your passport that allows you to enter the United States. SEVIS status is your record in the government database. You can have a valid visa but be out of SEVIS status, or vice versa. Both must be valid for your stay to be lawful.

Practical Takeaway: Check your SEVIS status regularly—at least once per semester or term—to catch errors or problems early. Many students discover status issues only when they need to travel or change programs, by which time the problem has grown more complicated.

How to Access Your SEVIS Record Online

The primary way to check your SEVIS status information is through the SEVIS Student Portal, which is maintained by the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). This online tool allows you to view your own SEVIS record without needing permission from your school or anyone else.

To use the SEVIS Student Portal, go to the official SEVP website. Look for the link labeled "SEVIS Student Portal" or "Check Your Status." You will need to create an account or log in with existing credentials. The portal uses an ID and password system. If you do not have login information, you can create an account by providing your SEVIS ID number, which appears on your I-20 or DS-2019 form (the official document your school issued when you were admitted).

Once you log into the portal, you will see several pieces of information about your SEVIS record. This includes your current status (active, inactive, or terminated), your school or program name, your program start and end dates, your authorized degree level, your authorized work permissions, and your current address on file. The portal also shows your full name, date of birth, passport number, and visa information as recorded in SEVIS.

The information displayed in the SEVIS Student Portal is what government officials see when they check your immigration file. If you notice errors—such as a misspelled name, wrong degree level, or incorrect end date—this is important to report to your school's international student office. While you cannot change information directly through the student portal, your school's designated school official (DSO) can make corrections in the SEVIS system.

Some schools also provide a student dashboard or international student portal through their own website. This is separate from the official SEVIS portal but often pulls information from SEVIS. Check with your school's international student office to learn whether your school offers its own portal and how to access it.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your SEVIS ID number and keep it in a safe place. This number is essential for accessing your SEVIS record and for many government transactions. Your SEVIS ID is different from your student ID number at your school.

What SEVIS Status Information Means

When you check your SEVIS record, you will see a status listed. The most common statuses are "Active," "Inactive," and "Terminated." Understanding what each status means is necessary for knowing whether your immigration situation is in order.

Active Status: This means your SEVIS record is current and valid. Your school or program has confirmed that you are enrolled and attending as required. Your program dates have not ended. You are permitted to remain in the United States under your visa type and maintain your status. When your SEVIS status is active, you can travel outside the U.S. and return (provided your visa is also valid), extend your stay, and work in positions that your visa type permits. Most students in good standing have an active SEVIS status.

Inactive Status: This means your SEVIS record exists but is not currently valid. An inactive status can occur for several reasons: your program end date has passed and your school has not extended it, you took a leave of absence and did not properly notify your school, you dropped below full-time enrollment without authorization, or your school deactivated your record for administrative reasons. Being in inactive SEVIS status means you are no longer in lawful immigration status in the United States, even if your visa is still valid. You cannot work, attend school, or travel outside the country and return. You should contact your school's international student office immediately if your SEVIS status becomes inactive, as this is a serious compliance issue.

Terminated Status: This status means your SEVIS record has been ended permanently by your school or by government action. This can happen if you violated the terms of your visa, withdrew from your program, transferred to another school without proper procedures, or failed to comply with SEVIS requirements. A terminated SEVIS status means you are out of lawful status and must leave the United States or take specific steps to restore your status (such as transferring to a new school if that is an option).

Your SEVIS record also displays your program end date. This is the date your current program of study is scheduled to end. After this date, your SEVIS status will become inactive unless your school extends it. Extensions are common for students continuing to a new degree level or for those who need extra time to complete their program.

Practical Takeaway: Know your program end date. If it is approaching within the next few months, contact your school's international student office to discuss your plans—whether you will extend your studies, apply for practical training, or prepare to depart the country.

Common SEVIS Status Issues and What They Mean

SEVIS records can contain errors or show problems that require attention. Knowing what these issues are helps you address them before they affect your immigration status.

Address Mismatches: Your SEVIS record must contain your current address. If you move and do not update your address with your school's international student office, your SEVIS record will show an old address. This can cause problems if government officials try to contact you or if you need to prove your residence for any reason. Most schools require you to report address changes within a certain number of days (often 10 days). You report address changes to your school, not directly to SEVIS, and the school updates the system.

Program Mismatch: Sometimes a student's SEVIS record shows a different degree level or major than what they are actually pursuing. For example, the SEVIS record might say you are pursuing a Bachelor's degree, but you have actually transferred to a Master's program. This is a significant error because your work permissions and authorized activities depend on your correct degree level. Your school's international student office must correct this by filing an amendment in SEVIS.

Enrollment Status Issues: SEVIS requires that F-1 students maintain full-time enrollment (usually at least 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students, or as defined by your school). If you drop below full-time status, your SEVIS status may become invalid. Some students drop courses without realizing the immigration consequences. Check with your international student office before dropping courses if you are an F-1 student.

Grace Period Confusion: After your program end date, you have a grace period (typically 60 days for F-1 students) to depart the United States or
